The cherry originates from the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. It was first cultivated by the Greeks in 4000 B.C. and only later introduced to Italy by the Romans in 73 B.C. as a luxury food. The first historical evidence of the presence of cherries in Apulia, however, only dates back to 1648 near Castellana Grotte.
The ripening period of cherries goes from May to the end of July, that’s why they are known as the fruits heralding summer.
Cherries also have numerous beneficial properties:
To preserve their freshness, cherries should be stored in a dark paper bag in a room with constant humidity; doing so they will last approximately 4-5 days.
In Greek mythology, the cherry tree was sacred to Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty and love. For that reason, the cherry is considered a good luck charm for lovers all over the world, so much so that in Sicily there is still a tradition of making declarations of love in the shade of a blossoming cherry tree.
